Osmoregulation and environment of cell

                         Osmoregulation

Water relation of cell

”To maintain the water and salt balance in the body or control of osmosis is called osmoregulation." Water is the solvent of all the solute in the cell. Each cell has adaptation for the definite quantity of water and salts in it. Only then it can perform its function properly. The Homeostatic mechanisms generally maintain this concentration within the cells.

Balance of water and solute in the body:

The extracellular environment is constantly changing. There are three types of environments. These are:

Hypotonic environment:

A dilute solution as compared to the cell concentration is called hypotonic environment. Water enters osmotically into the cell from the hypotonic environment. Thus the cell solution becomes dilute. The cell also become turgid  such cell may be  harmed.

Hypertonic environment:

The more concentrated external environment is called hypertonic environment. In this case, cell loss water. It makes the cell solution concentrated. So the cell shrinks.

Isotonic environment:
If the outer solution resembles to the internal solution, it is called isotonic environment.
